India’s relentless pursuit of happiness remained unimpeded in the World Cup as they secured their fourth successful chase, this time against Bangladesh, clinching a resounding seven-wicket victory at the MCA International Stadium on a Thursday night. India, trailing Bangladesh’s total of 256 for eight, managed to reach 261 for three in 41.3 overs, with Virat Kohli’s exceptional century (103 not out, 97 balls, 6 boundaries, 4 sixes) serving as the guiding force.

Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill – Opening Partnership

Right from the start, the Men in Blue galloped at full throttle, with their stylish opening pair putting tremendous pressure on the Bangladesh bowling attack. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill treated themselves to delightful boundaries, with fours off Shoriful Islam and Mustafizur Rahman. Spectacular sixes were also part of the spectacle, as Rohit sent Shoriful soaring into the stands. When Nasum Ahmed entered the scene, punches, drives, and slog sweeps were beautifully executed. Gill even lofted the spinner for a towering six. In an over from Mustafizur, Gill displayed his finesse, driving the ball on either side. Unfortunately, Rohit (48) fell after hitting a six off Hasan Mahmud and attempting a repeat.

Virat Kohli – Unleashed Aggression with 48th ODI Century

Virat Kohli unleashed his aggression, capitalizing on consecutive no-balls. He collected two runs, a four (free hit), and a six (free hit) – 12 runs in three explosive deliveries. This particular over turned out to be a mixed bag for Mahmud as his no-balls and free-hits allowed Kohli to capitalize, resulting in a total of 23 runs. Kohli and Gill maintained the momentum, but Gill, after surpassing the 50-run mark, was caught by a fielder near the ropes. At 19.2 overs, India stood at 132 for two, with Kohli firmly anchoring the innings.

Kohli then formed a partnership with Shreyas Iyer. They focused on stealing singles and playing defensively in the middle overs to ensure the stability of the innings, as losing wickets could have forced an injured Hardik Pandya to come out to bat. However, Shreyas attempted a risky shot and was dismissed.

K.L. Rahul then joined Kohli, and the two batsmen buckled down. While Rahul began with an audacious cut for four against the spin, he quickly adjusted his approach and played more conservatively. He did play a few aggressive shots. What started as a one-sided match turned intriguing as Kohli, in a thrilling display, notched his 48th ODI century and sealed the win with a six.

Rohit Sharma on Hardik Pandya

During the post-match presentation, Rohit Sharma reassured that Pandya’s injury is not a major concern. While Pandya appeared fine, he will be closely monitored and cared for to ensure his match fitness for the upcoming game.

In the afternoon, fans made their way to the venue through narrow country roads. On the field, Bangladesh’s injured captain, Shakib Al Hasan, was ruled out, and stand-in captain Najmul Hossain won the toss and elected to bat. On a flat pitch, openers Litton Das and Tanzid Hasan started cautiously before shifting into a higher gear.

Tanzid Hasan was the aggressor, taking on Mohammed Siraj and even hitting a six off Jasprit Bumrah. However, Hardik Pandya’s brief bowling spell ended as he hobbled out due to a left-ankle injury. Meanwhile, Tanzid tried to sweep spinner Kuldeep Yadav and got trapped, scoring 51. India secured their second wicket when Ravindra Jadeja trapped Najmul Hossain leg before wicket, initiating a stranglehold in the middle overs.

Mehidy Hasan was dismissed, feathering a delivery down the leg-side, and K.L. Rahul took a fantastic diving left-handed catch. Soon, Litton Das was caught by Jadeja, Mushfiqur Rahim attempted to stabilize the innings, and Mahmudullah tried to launch a counterattack.

Nevertheless, India maintained tight control, with the highlight being Jadeja’s acrobatic catch to halt Mushfiqur’s innings. Despite a strong start at 90 for no loss, Bangladesh faltered and failed to recover.
